Improving the ecological environment of Qingdao for 2008 Olympic Games of Sailing

As a scenic coastal city with thriving economy, Qingdao has been chosen as partner of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games of Sailing. In order to improve the ecological environment, the Qingdao Municipal Government has selected Veolia Water for Maidao wastewater treatment plants project.

The needs

Briefly the extension of the existing Maidao facilities shall comprise the design, construction, commissioning, tests on completion and the remedying of any defects.

The pre-existing Maidao waste water treatment plant (with a design capacity of 100,000 m3/day) had started operation at the end 1998. The existing train treatment (consisting only a primary treatment), was not enough to satisfy the necessary quality requirements for discharging the outlet water to the sea.

Our solution

VWS Beijing proposed upgrading works and modifications to the existing plant and the provision of the 140,000 m3/d extension, to meet the water quality requirements.

The new wastewater treatment plant process include a pre-treatment (coarse screen, fine screen, grit and grease removal), Multiflo® settlers for primary treatment, Biostyr® biofilters for biological treatment, mesophilic anaerobic digestion and centrifugation dewatering for sludge treatment, UV for disinfection and Alizair® for odour treatment.

The selected secondary treatment, Biostyr® is a biofiltration system, using an aerated fixed bed reactor for biofilm attachment and solids retention, achieving simultaneously the nitrification and denitrification of the ammonia, and the filtration of water. The Biostyr® process consists of an upflow filtration, co-current with process air, through a submerged and floating fine granular media.

VWS Beijing chose to propose a secondary treatment by Biostyr® Biological Aerated Filter:

  • Suitable for the local context in terms of land constrain and loads/flow to be treated,
  • Answering the performances required in terms of water quality of the discharge and odour reduction
  • Looking for the environment protection in the context of the Chinese strategy for water pollution prevention and treatment
